"Harvey" Program

The Community Players of Salisbury

President’s Message

Dear Friends and Family,

Greetings and welcome once again to Wor Wic Community College for our second show of the 2006/2007 season, the classic Harvey. If you are not familiar with Harvey, he is the ever intelligent and mindful, kind hearted white rabbit who looks after Elwood. Do you remember your childhood and having an imaginary friend – that one person (or rabbit) you could turn to for help, support, understanding and companionship. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all find that simple yet sweet and innocent imaginary friend today…

As always we thank you for your continued support and patronage of the arts and hope to see you again in the summer for our final production, the musical, The Fantasticks.

As in every production, there are individuals who have come to our aid and unfortunately are not mentioned in the program. We want to thank them and everyone who made this production possible.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

Don Atkinson (William R Chumley, M.D.) - As a trained psychiatrist with a national reputation and owner of Chumley's Rest, a mental patient sanitarium, I have been observing this cast and crew for several weeks. In my opinion, they are all suffering from mental illness. In laymen's terms, they are all NUTS! The cast, especially, behave as puppets whose strings are being pulled by some maniacal director (I believe his name is Kel Nagel). His intentions will only be made clear, I believe, if we let them progress through to their finale. On my part, I will let them proceed. If we interrupt them with laughter caused by their follies, the results will not be pretty, but they will be funny. So sit back, observe and take notes. You and I will confer afterwards and devise a course of treatment for these poor souls.

Richard Bird (E. F. Lofgren) - By day a Neurologist, by night an aspiring actor. I have participated in several musicals: Hello Dolly, Wizard of Oz, Footloose, Anything Goes and several other plays including My Three Angels, Sunshine Boys, The Mouse That Roared, and An Inspector Calls.

Jennifer Bratten (Myrtle Mae Simmons) - Jenny has been performing with Community Players since 1991 when she was given a role as a dancer in The King and I. Since then, she has appeared in numerous musicals and has been Bet in Oliver!, Beth in Little Women and Jill in The Mouse That Roared. In addition to working with the Community Players, Jenny has performed with Parker Productions (Cinderella in Cinderella, Dancing Card in Alice in Wonderland), and several community and school theater troupes. In her daytime life Jenny is a foreign language teacher.

Chris Bosies (Duane Wilson) - Chris made his debut with Players in 1994 when he appeared in Cinderella. Since then he has appeared in numerous Players productions such as Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, Annie and Bye-Bye Birdie. He was last seen on the Players stage two years ago in Don’t Drink the Water and You Can’t Take It with You. Chris has also performed with the Bobbi Biron Theatre at SU, Alternate Community Theatre, The Dorchester Unity Players, The Eastern Shore Ballet, Radio Airwaves, The Ocean Pines Players and Parker Productions. More recently he has appeared in three independent films: Enchantment, The Lumberjack of All Trades, and Even Steven. Chris would like to thank his wife, Bonnie, and his mother, Mildred, for their love and support.

Bob Connelly (Judge Omar Gaffney) -. Bob Connelly (Judge Gaffney) has been in Community Players long enough to have been in two separate productions of My Fair Lady, the last as Henry Higgins. Among many other roles, he played Q-bomb inventor, Dr Kokintz in The Mouse That Roared and Grandpa in You Can't Take It with You. He played Gaffney in our 1982 production of Harvey, and says that this time we won't have to powder his hair to make him look old.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST (Cont.)

Amanda Welch Hamill (Nurse Kelly) - Mandy is a graduate of Catholic University with a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting. At Catholic, she appeared in such roles as Miss Julie in Miss Julie, Lady Macbeth and Beatrice in the Shakespeare Project, and Nina in The Seagull. She debuted with Players’ as Anne in Cheaper by the Dozen. Over the past fourteen years, she has been in such Players’ shows as Laura in the Glass Menagerie, Corie in Barefoot in the Park, and most recently Gillian in Bell, Book, & Candle. Mandy would like to thank her friends and family for all of their love and support. PS: Harvey, please stop taking Tom to "Blondie’s Chicken Inn."

Tom Hamill (Lyman Sanderson, M.D.) - Tom is thrilled to return to Players for his fourth play with them. While Players has served as a consistent way for Tom to exercise his thespian muscle, it also led him to his beautiful wife, Mandy, who also stars in this production of Harvey. Although Harvey's flirtatious ways have nearly led to marital strife, Tom is still thrilled to be spending so much time in the presence of such, in the words of Elwood P. himself, lovely people. Tom spends his spare time teaching English and Latin at Snow Hill High School.

Pam Lowe (Betty Chumley) - Born in Philly and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Pamela Lowe is a country gal and an entrepreneur who wears many hats. There is the Mom hat, the researcher and development hat, the feline therapist hat, and now the actress hat! Miss Lowe would like to thank Kel Nagel and The Community Players of Salisbury for helping her break the stereotype of Bob Cratchet that formerly plagued her career in theater. Also a very special thanks to her life-long friend Kate Schroeder for taking her under her very talented wing and helping her bring life to Mrs. Chumley!

Rusty Mumford (Elwood P. Dowd) - Rusty has been a Players’ member for 20 years being involved in almost every production, either on stage or backstage. Rusty has been seen on Players’ stage in My Three Angels, The Wizard of Oz, Social Security, Lend Me a Tenor, The Mouse That Roared, Footloose, You Can’t Take It with You, Godspell and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. He directed Cheaper by the Dozen, Come Blow Your Horn, Spider’s Web, Meet Me in St. Louis and Anything Goes. Thanks to Becky, and his family for their love and support!

Mary Veise (Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet) - Mary got off her roller skates as Betty Blast in Footloose to appear in Anything Goes as a passenger. Now on dry land she portrays Mrs. Chauvenet. She has been involved in some way in almost all Players shows since The Sound of Music in 1970. Mary Veise is a Life Member and past President of Community Players.

WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES

Kel Nagel (Director) - Kel has performed in many Players productions since his debut as Big Jule’s bodyguard in Guys and Dolls in 1996. Favorite roles include Blessington in Solid Gold Cadillac, Charlie Cowell in Music Man, the evil Uncle Henri in My Three Angels and the president in The Mouse That Roared. Most recently he was the bishop in Anything Goes. Harvey is his second stab at directing. You Can’t Take It with You in 2005 was his first.

Carol Alex (Producer) - Carol works tirelessly behind the scenes. She serves as producer for this play, but also helps with costumes. She, as house manager, and her husband, John, as ticket committee chairman, make sure you get into the theatre and have a seat. Carol has been a Players officer for many years.

Gary Finley (Lighting Design) – Gary has been lighting shows for Wor-Wic Community College for over six years, including Lizzie Borden, the annual Dessert Theatre and Variety Shows. Most recently Gary has done lighting and special effects for Bell, Book and Candle and You Can't Take It with You, both Players productions.

Joanne Little (Props) - Joanne Little is a Lifetime Member of Players. She has handled props for many of our non-musical shows and been the pianist for more than 40 musicals. Her last on-stage role was in Come Blow Your Horn. She is organist and choir director at Manokin Presbyterian Church in Princess Anne.

Ernie Matthews (Set Design and Set Construction) - Ernie has been a backbone of The Community Players for many years. Not only are many of the sets you see on stage built under his direction, but he has had a hand in their design as well. That, however, is only one of his hats; he also takes care of our patrons and is in charge of season ticket sales and our regular tickets. He also finds time to direct occasionally.

Debby Nagel (set decorator) -.Debby has helped with sets, costumes and props in several shows. She previously was set decorator for You Can’t Take It with You and Don't Drink the Water.

Tom Robinson (Sound) - Tom is Technical Ministries Director for Christ UM Church. With Players, he is both on stage and behind the scenes. He was in Hello Dolly, The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis. He did special effects for The Wizard of Oz and You Can’t Take It with You and sound for Godspell, A Christmas Carol, How to Succeed in Business, Don’t Drink the Water, Footloose, and Laughing Stock.

Kate Schroeder (Stage Manager) - This is Kate's second involvement with The Community Players of Salisbury having debuted on stage in the June, 2005 production of Don't Drink the Water. Kate caught the theatre bug in high school when she was cast as one of the madwomen in The Madwomen of Chaillot, and has been actively involved in theatre in one way or another ever since. She relocated to this area from Chestertown, MD, leaving behind a community theatre group she co-founded in 1984 named Actor’s Community Theatre. She has worked in every conceivable capacity with ACT. Kate lives in Newark, MD with her husband, Jeff and works for a Consulting Engineering and Surveying Firm in Berlin, MD.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Harvey is the story of a sweet man, Elwood P Dowd, and his best friend, a six and a half foot tall invisible rabbit. It takes place in the late 1940’s in an unnamed western city, somewhere west of Wichita and east of Pasadena.

Elwood’s sister, Veta Simmons, and her daughter Myrtle Mae, have moved home from Des Moines after the death of the matriarch of the family, Marcella Pinney Dowd, a socially important woman who dominated the household while Elwood and Veta were growing up.

Veta and Myrtle Mae are surprised to find Elwood living with his invisible magical friend, Harvey, whose presence interferes with their plans to re-enter local society and get Myrtle into a successful marriage. This tension produces hilarious results when they decide that the solution to their problems is to have Elwood committed in Chumley’s Rest, a sanitarium for the mentally ill.

The play satirizes pre-feminism America, women, men, psychiatrists, lawyers and anyone else who is handy, but the bottom line is that it is a funny and touching story. We hope our audience will enjoy seeing it as much as we enjoyed doing it.

It has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to direct this show. The cast has worked very hard and will be enjoyed by all. While it is unusual for a director to single out individual cast members, I must say that it is especially difficult to play roles known to audiences to "belong" to such stars as James Stewart and Josephine Hull. I am sure that you will agree that Rusty and Barbara have done an outstanding job of making Elwood and Veta their own.

As usual I will not be able to thank individually everyone who helped with Harvey. Thanks and apologies to anyone I inadvertently skip.

Thanks to our producer, Carol Alex for all her help in getting this show together.

Special thanks to my friend Louise Essick for the portrait of Elwood and Harvey. I think she is hoping that some time I will direct a show in which she doesn’t have to paint a picture.

I can’t say enough about Ernie Matthews and his ingenious set design. Those who have not been on the Guerrieri stage will not realize what Ernie has accomplished in getting the library and the sanitarium up there; his work was no less than brilliant. Thanks also to Kate Schroeder for volunteering to be stage manager and to the stage crew for getting the scene changes done. It is quite an effort.

And finally, thanks, as usual, to Debby Nagel, for everything.

Kel Nagel
